Rosemary is one of those essential oils that has a famous use - restoring hair growth. Research has shown its ability, when massaged into the scalp in combination with other oils and a carrier oil (1), or on its own in a carrier oil (2) to promote growth of hair to a significant extent.
I strongly recommend diluting the rosemary oil in a carrier oil to avoid any irritation and, ideally, doing a patch test 24 hours before to ensure you don't react to it. Add a teaspoon of rosemary essential oil to 1/2 cup of your carrier oil, and presto! You have a hair stimulating serum without the nasty side effects of many expensive hair treatments.
For the blended recipe research they used:
- 2 drops of Thyme (Thyme vulgaris)
- 2 drops of Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
- 3 drops of Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)
- 2 drops of Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica)
In a carrier oil of 3 ml of jojoba oil and 20 ml of grapeseed oil.
The oils were massaged into the scalp for a minimum of 2 minutes. A warm towel was then wrapped around the head to aid absorption of the oils. This could, of course, be extended to overnight. Patients were advised to use this technique every night for 7 months.
There are, of course, many other known uses, including enhancing cognitive function (so great to use while studying), sleep quality, mood, and pain management. Here, you can find a link to a summary paper looking at 39 other research papers which have found practical applications of using the oil.
Something that you won't find in scientific literature, but is one of my favorite uses of rosemary is for psychic protection. It has often been planted around sacred sites for this purpose and, although science will never be able to show this (at least not with any measuring instruments I am aware of!) it has been shown that the plant's antimicrobial compounds genuinely purify air when burned. This convergence of tradition and evidence makes it valuable for those seeking protection grounded in both cultural wisdom and biological reality.
